HOMESTEAD METRO PARK
DUBLIN, OH | SITE PLANNING
The Columbus Metroparks was looking to reprogram the Homestead location to make it their own having recently taken over the park from Washington Township. The Metroparks staff and park rangers provided a list of items that were in need of immediate attention in conjunction with an agenda of other possible amenity improvements that could be implemented long term. POD design was tasked with providing a phased conceptual plan that could address the staff’s concerns while providing a safe, unique experience for park visitors for years to come.
After a series of work sessions with park staff, POD was able to provide multiple diagrammatic solutions which addressed key park improvements. The final plan derived from a combination of these diagrams included improved vehicular traffic flow by revising traffic patterns along with relocating parking to limit pedestrian and vehicle conflict. POD was able to enhance the pedestrian experience by providing additional paved trail to access under utilized areas of the park with a new network of secondary paths to create a series of smaller loops.
Other improvements were suggested to build upon the park’s foundation including adding a clear and direct access point to the Central Ohio Greenway’s Heritage Trail. Expansion of existing park shelters and additional structures were recommended to aid with the growing popularity of the park.
A key area of the park which POD provided solutions for was a dilapidated former spray-ground and the unfinished ice-skating ribbon. Options for this area included a range of unique activities for different budget parameters including an 18-hole championship putting course, a synthetic ice-skating feature, and an aerial ropes course. When implemented, any of these options would be distinctly unique to not only the Metroparks, but central Ohio.
